Respect the Brain Bucket

In an ongoing effort to promote safety and reduce head injuries, Fernie’s “Respect the Brain Bucket Helmet Challenge” has announced Tanner Smyth as the winner for July. The challenge, which began his Summer, aims to encourage residents to wear helmets while cycling or skateboarding by rewarding those who do.

Constable Spyker awarded Tanner Smyth with a skateboard and several gift certificates from local Fernie stores as part of the “Respect the Brain Bucket” positive ticket campaign.

The campaign will run until September 21st, with a grand prize draw at the Fernie Family Safety Day. Community volunteers are distributing entry tickets to those seen properly wearing helmets at various locations, including the Fernie Skatepark, dirt jumps, and popular trails around the community. Prize draws occur at the end of each month, leading up to the grand prize announcement in September.

“Helmet use among the adult population in Fernie is particularly low, and our physicians and nurses are seeing more children not wearing helmets because their parents aren’t either. Proper helmet safety is critical at all ages, and we want to encourage that with this campaign,” stated Dana Stimson, FEI Project Manager at the Elk Valley Hospital Medical Staff Association.

The “Respect the Brain Bucket” campaign is receiving strong support from local bike and skate shops, as well as other businesses throughout Fernie. Anyone who receives an entry ticket can redeem it at GearHub Sports, Straight Line Bicycles, and The Guide’s Hut for a chance to win prizes.

The campaign not only aims to raise awareness about the importance of helmet use but also seeks to foster a culture of safety within the community, ultimately leading to a decrease in head injuries and promoting well-being across Fernie.
