Fernie woke up to its first snowfall of the season earlier this week. In Fernie winter is not a season, it’s a celebration! And Fernie does it right with snow season celebrations beginning next weekend in preparation for Fernie Alpine Resort’s opening on December 3rd!
In appropriate order, first we need gear to play so the celebrations begin with the Fernie Alpine Ski Team’s (FAST) Ski Swap on November 4th and 5th.
If you need new-used ski gear or wish to sell your old gear, this is Fernie’s sniagrab! You can drop your gear off at the Fernie Community Center on Friday November 4, 6pm till 8pm, and then you can line-up on Saturday at 8am to get first pick of the best deals! The sale runs from 9am to 3pm and this is the place for the best value in town! As Warren Miller wrote, Sniagrab isn’t a snow dance.
FAST is built around the goal to strive for a fun, safe and competitive, skill-based ski racing program focused on developing each kid’s personal best as a skier, athlete and individual. FAST is one of the longest standing and most accomplished ski clubs in BC with over 200 athletes from ages four through 19.
The swap if followed by the official stoke and safety weekend with the Fernie Ski & Board Film Fest and the Elk Valley Snow Avalanche Workshop (EVSAW).
The Fernie Ski & Board Film Fest is Fernie’s unofficial launch to the snow season as skiers and boarders gather at the Fernie Community Centre to celebrate the coming snow season and watch three of the season’s top ski and board films.
The event is famous for great swag and prizing with a few lucky attendee’s going home with catskiing, skis, boards, clothing and everyone attending will receive a 2 for 1 lift ticket voucher to Fernie Alpine Resort!
Three feature films will be presented on a large format screen with a professional image and dolby sound. Fernie vendors will be once again be serving fresh tasty pizza, popcorn, cold beer and other beverages.

This one-day seminar welcomes avalanche professionals and recreationalists alike to engage in vibrant discussions and learn from fellow avalanche practitioners. The variety of topics includes case studies of past avalanche events and information on the latest snow safety gear. You can expect all the backcountry clubs to be there and the event is a must for anyone interested in playing safely in the backcountry.
