Fernie locals and visitors will see a new ski shuttle bus on the roads for this coming ski season thanks to a partnership between the City of Fernie, Tourism Fernie, the Fernie Chamber of Commerce and Resorts of the Canadian Rockies.
“The tourism sector was driven to see a new sustainable transportation model for this coming season and the partners are pleased to present one,” exclaimed Jikke Gyorki, Executive Officer at Tourism Fernie. After much research into shuttles in other resort communities it was determined that Revelstoke’s local shuttle was one to partially model after. The two key components of their model for Fernie was the municipality purchasing the shuttle buses with funding from the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) and the strong partnership between the City, Tourism DMO, Chamber and resort.
Thanks to the RMI funding and industry support, the City of Fernie purchased two 24 passenger buses to be used for the local ski shuttle service. The final details are still in the works but the service is expected to start on December 21st and run daily until April 8th. The day and evening service will provide visitors and locals transportation between town and Fernie Alpine Resort.
“At this stage, the rider fare will be $4 each way per person with the option to purchase a 10 Ride Card for $35 including taxes,” explained Jikke. “Riders can pay on the bus or pick up a ticket or Ride Card in advance. Seats will be on a first come first served basis.”
