The apartments behind A&W are owned by the IGS group. I don’t know if any are available, but they are good unfurnished apartments and the rent is very affordable. I think there is a notice posted on the entrance doors, so you could try going by and getting that. I’ve never seen them advertise these apartments anywhere else, I guess they don’t need to. Or you could go into IGS and talk to Ingrid.
Have you advertised that you are looking? There’s various accom. forums online, and the noticeboard behind the library.
Good luck!
seasonsgreetingsParticipantA lot of people are listening, and I’ll bet a lot of people (including me) would agree with most of your post but the question should really be “is anyone going to do anything about it?” – What are you going to do about it?
By the way, most of the houses on the golf course are actually lived in year round, I don’t know the percentages, but as far as I know all but one of the houses on Skifty Morris Way are permanent residents, and at least a few of the other houses.
seasonsgreetingsParticipantTo be fair, you have to admit that for all of those points you could have been talking about Fernie…
Flies are terrible here in the summer too…
Bank charges are almost identical to what you describe…
Heat…have you been here in late July? 30+ is normal. The benefit here though is the lack of humidity. I can handle the heat here (well, when it starts heading for 40 I get a little sick of it), but when it hits 30+ over in Sydney the humidity is over 90% and you feel like you are standing in a hot shower all day. It’s exhausting.
TV…ads, ads, ads, exactly the same. Takes 3.5 hours to watch a movie.
Aussies…well, I think un-manly has proven that they just turn up everywhere, even being in Fernie you can’t avoid them!!! (They’re not all bad though…seasonsgreetingsParticipantThis must be a very frustrating situation for you. I can’t speak for the community but I am sure that no-one blames the local ambulance crew for the current state of the ambulance service. I read the articles you mention and I saw them as an attack on the decision-makers, not the paramedics themselves. No-one has ever faulted the level of medical care they have received when attended by the ambulance service, the only criticisisms have been directly about the response time and the lack of coverage – topics that I’m sure everyone is aware is out of your hands.
Similar complaints are being made regarding the Elk Valley Hospital, but it’s about the levels of staffing, not the quality of care provided and certainly not an attack on the wonderful over-stretched staff who work there.
I am horrified at the numbers you quote and I can’t believe with the expansion of the ski resort and the recent boom in mining that your staffing levels have dropped will your call rates have sky-rocketed. Most of the ski resort calls (a huge chunk of your work, I’m sure) would be insurance claims, so there must be money coming in – I can’t understand why it’s not being funneled back to us. I am confused about one part of your post – the third paragraph – you mention that there are two full time vacancies. Why have these not been filled? Is it because BC Ambulance are not accepting applications or because there are no qualified applicants? Do we need more people to train or do we need the funding to be higher? Is it a question or salary, location or politics?
You have asked us to help, write letters and emails to our MLA and your management. I’m sure if I hunted around I could find the email and mail addresses, but we are all busy and if you are asking for help you need to make it easy for us. I asked in a previous forum for the contacts or a petition to sign, and got no response. Your posts, while I’m sure unintentionally, come accross as defensive when you should be trying to rally the community. Please post the contacts we need to write the letters to; start a petition; write a body of text with the pertinent points and accurate facts that people can copy and paste into an email and forward with their own name to the appropriate email addresses. Help us to help you!
seasonsgreetingsParticipantYou obviously haven’t been in Fernie long, you’ll get a lot of virtual smacks for mentioning the R word.
Not gonna help our tourist trade much, ‘specially with us being in Peak (hah! what????) season now for lift tickets.
Might be a positive on the City side though, we need water upgrades, the more rain and icky water we have, the more likely we are to get the work done that is needed. It seems that water quality advisories don’t get issued on the weekends, but I’ve already posted the notices, I’ll bet we’d be getting an email right now if there was anyone in the office on a saturday.
seasonsgreetingsParticipantThis has just become a case of who can get the last word.
I think we need to LET “un-manly” have the last word, so he can see his login name on the website for as long as possible. He obviously doesn’t have anything else to say, so by LETTING him have the last word, he might shut up. If you continue to post messages, he’s just going to do the same and it’ll be a battle of wills as to who can be bothered keeping it up the longest.
By LETTING him have the last post, we know that if he posts, it’s only to see his name on here again. If he doesn’t it’s because he doesn’t want to do it just because we LET him. He has nothing to say anyway, so it doesn’t matter either way, just let it go.
seasonsgreetingsParticipant“I win” – oh please!!!! Are you old enough to have your own passport?
seasonsgreetingsParticipantMaaaaaaate
The only thing you’ve hit is a losing streak. That’s just typical aussie, trying to make out like you were just out to wind people up when you start to lose the argument. The thing is, as was pointed out before, you are here, in Fernie, having an awesome time, and just like us you chose to be here. When you leave, we will all still be here, still having an awesome time, because we all love it here year round. People travel the world to find somewhere like Fernie to settle down. A lot of those people go to Oz on their journey, but the truth is most of them leave too. Try to appreciate what you have and where you are, and give the locals a little respect, cos you’re never gonna win this battle here in Fernie – we just love our little town too much.
seasonsgreetingsParticipantHey Manly
I lived in Oz for 3 years but I chose to make Fernie my home, and I’ve been here a lot longer now than I was there. As you’ve obviously never been here in the summer, don’t bag something you know nothing about. The summers here are awesome, and as hot as any day in Sydney. We got lakes and rivers for swimming and tubing, and mountains for hiking and biking. This area has one of the world’s only growing grizzly populations, so I think we are doing just fine there.
When I was in Oz I took several trips down to the snow and I seem to remember seeing a ton of Roos, wallabies and other wildlife either shot (from what I remember it’s kind of a sport down there to drive down the highway in your ute shooting at the wildlife) or blasted all to hell off the front of someone’s bull bars.
And for the record, I’ve been to Manly, it’s a crappy little seaside joint (with plenty of fast food joints!) and I never once saw a sea-eagle. And there’s a ton more aussies here in Fernie and all across the rest of Canada, than there ever was Canadians in Oz, so I’d stop suggesting that we all want to live there, coz if it was true then we would have gone by now!
Ya don’t like it here, bugger off home!
seasonsgreetingsParticipantHah! Flasher, that is exactly what he looks like. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong! As mentioned in a certain publication this month, the whole Mardi Gras theme is a little confusing. Griz Days always had it’s own theme – ie, the Griz, so not sure why we needed a whole new theme. If it aint broke don’t fix it! The folks in charge are working very hard to keep Griz days a sucess, but I never did like the Mardi Gras theme, I like the down-to-earth, axe throwing, beer chugging, sled racing, mountain man! I don’t think he needs those beads!
seasonsgreetingsParticipantVancouver is about a 12 hour drive, so to include that in a two week visit might be a bit much, although as dj said, it is a beatiful drive. This time of year you can easily get stuck though, or have to drive at 50kmph for hours on end, so you’d need to allow a couple of extra days…
Getting to Cranbrook is an issue that crops up often enough to be noticeable, but not often enough to warrant a new service, unfortunately. I would keep trying rent-a-wreck, they are only open minimal hours during the week and not on weekends, but you should be able to get hold of someone eventually. The office is located at the Best Western (250 423 5500) so you could try ringing them to find out if they know when someone will be there. We don’t have any other rental services in Fernie that I know of. All the other rental companies are based in Cranbrook…
You could try getting in touch with Kootenay Taxi, our local taxi service, who will do transfers to Cranbrook. Don’t know if they would be any cheaper than the shuttle services. 250 423 4408.
Sounds like you already have all the bus options that are available – Greyhound, Rocky Mountain Sky Shuttle, Mountain Perks, Smokey Mountain Charters.
Your only other option is to post a new subject on here saying you are looking for a ride to Cranbrook, with your dates and times, and offer to share gas…There’s people going there every day, so you should be able to get hold of someone…
Good luck!
seasonsgreetingsParticipantInghams used to stay at the Stamford Inn, when it was called the Riverside. I don’t know if they still use that accommodation. I think they also use the Park Place Lodge.
For rentals, you have a lot of choices. In town there are several places on 2nd Ave that do rentals, you’ll get great service by experienced technicians and probably good rates too. There’s also a rental place on the highway, which would be handy if your accommodation is on the highway. On the hill there is the resort rental shop, which is very convenient if you want to change anything. There’s also Quest rentals at Lizard Creek Lodge which offer great service, and boot fitting specialists at the Griz Inn who have been voted the best in Canada.
I’d have to go with the majority on the snow blades. To get the most out of Fernie’s slopes you need to get off the groomers, on blades you’ll just be stuck the whole time. I skied with a blader once, who said the only reason he used them was because it was the only thing he could use due to injuries to his elbows and hips, but if he had a choice, he’d be skiing. You don’t see blades here much.
You don’t really need to book lessons in advance, I’d wait till you get here. Lift tickets? Lets just say be prepared to earn a lot of airmiles on your credit card. Check out http://www.skifernie.com for rates etc. I would definately allow at least one day for an alternate activity, like cat-skiing, dog-sledding or getting a guide to take you back country.
BTW, it’s been snowing pretty much non-stop since November. You’re gonna have a blast.
seasonsgreetingsParticipantPlease don’t let this happen!!!
Every Fernie resident has a responsibility to try to stop the School Board from closing our schools. We have already lost one , and to lose another school would be a tradgedy. I know enrollment was down this year at Max Turyk but from talking to local parents, it sounds like that was partly a knee-jerk reaction to the rumour that the school would be closing, so everyone enrolled their kids at IDES, which is now overflowing. Where are these extra kids going to go? IDES is certainly not big enough, and as far as I know the Academy is already at capacity enrollment for the past couple of years.
Walk up and down 2nd Ave, how many parents do you see with strollers? There are plenty of little kids out there – where are they going to go to school? How do we encourage families to come here if we are closing the schools down?
It’s time to do something about this. Please, someone list on here what action we can take. Who do we write to? Who do we call? Who is putting together a petition and where can it be signed?
seasonsgreetingsParticipantDid anyone else see the herd (about 10 or 12) of deer on 7th ave last night at about 11.30pm? Deer in the downtown or annex are certainly not unusual, but I’ve never seen that many so close to the highway before.
Obviously not such a threat as cougars, but I’m glad to see our local wildlife thriving!
