You won’t find a better selection of skis and boots (all suited for Fernie) than in Fernie itself. The prices will be the same as everywhere else. So save yourself the hassle of travelling with all that gear and buy it here.
You can find the ski hill maps here – http://www.skifernie.com/the-mountain/trail-maps.aspx
It is a 5 minute drive from town, the shuttle system is sketchy at the best of times, if you can even find info about it. Hitch hiking from town is the most popular way of getting to the hill.
imported_rylandParticipanti had some roof leakage recently too. so I built a ramp up onto the top of my house so I could get the snowblower up there and clear the meter or so of snowpack from the top. roof is now no longer leaking.
imported_rylandParticipantisn’t that interesting
imported_rylandParticipantSure glad we are owned by the leading resort/oil sands/hockey team operator in canada! phew
imported_rylandParticipantpeople have been hiking the ski hill before it opens since the beginning of time. It has become more of an issue recently as the resort isn’t opening when there is enough snow to ski so there is more time that people want to be riding while the resort is waiting to open.
If the ski hill would open when there is enough snow to ski on there wouldn’t be this problem. And if they aren’t opening when conditions permit maybe they shouldn’t be posting photos and videos of people skiing early season prior to the lifts opening. Thats just being really cheeky if you ask me.
People are going to continue to hike the ski hill if there is enough snow to ski, there isn’t much that can be done. So if your going to go out be super aware of snowcats and their winch cables, snowmobiles and avalanches. Don’t ski gnarly terrain where you could cut a slope down onto unsuspecting people below you. There are lots of pretty safe zones out there like surprise trees, siberia ridge, north ridge, the bear, curry powder etc.
Maybe they will open for a "preview weekend" That would help quell peoples early season urges to ride! Or better yet just get er open for the season like they have done everywhere else where the conditions have allowed (whistler, cypress, baker, whitewater next weekend etc)
imported_rylandParticipantyep. my ski pass price went UP even before HST was applied
imported_rylandParticipanthow did you manage to pull wildsight into this exactly? Wildsight has never taken any position on the HST.
I personally collected a few HST signatures, even though I think the HST has alot of merit. What I disagreed with was the loss of PST exemptions on numerous things that were meant to encourage healthy and sustainable actions. Like bikes, ski passes, fitness programs and items that people can use to increase the efficiency of their homes.
And I totally agree with the concept of taxing consumption. But the HST exempts businesses from that model.
