gavitronParticipant
I just read the entire thread, and there is a lot going on to reply to! SO heres just some random thoughts that came to mind:
-I go to Alberta because I love NOT paying PST
-I’m relieved that I don’t have to pay $20 a day to fish here
-I DID however pay a one time fee this past year to fish in the Elk, as it is now “classified” ($25 or $30 if I recall correctly) and I was ok with that.
-I strolled down the Elk this summer as I always have, and noticed more and more damn (can we say that on here?) boats floating through my fishing spots.
-I left my car with BC plates unattended for hours on end….no resulting vandalism.
-I can admit, when I was younger I slashed a couple tires with no motive other than trying to be bad ass (apologies to whoevers tires those were)
-I get the feeling that the non-resident fees came into affect so that less people would fish here, so as offended as some may be, the plan must be working? Although I can’t see why we would want to scare people away.
-If I was asked my opinion, I would suggest a ban on boats, I can’t even imagine fishing the river in a boat, is that even enjoyable? Half the fun to me is wandering aimlessly up and down the shores all day.
-I catch less fish these days than I used to, but I still catch enough to keep myself happy. I am a little worried that in the future this will not be true.
-All I think when I see Albertan plates is “Great, this guy is gonna be slowing down for every frikin corner” (Nothing wrong with driving cautiously I suppose)Anyways, thanks to everyone who does respect the river and your fellow fishermen.
gavitronParticipantI type this well aware of the fact that I am being a “typical local”:
I can’t even begin to explain how disgusting this is. Marko, in the mere five or so years you have been coming to Fernie, you should have realized that the Mogul Smoker is an age old tradition in Fernie and no one has ever paid anyone besides the taxi shuttle to be able to attend it. Paid musicians and heated tents (what kind of sissies are coming to town these days?) are not a requirement for this party. Bring your own drinks, start a couple huge bon fires, get some guys with big stereos in their trucks, or have someone donate a generator to power a DJ who is willing to donate his time, invite the entire town, sacrifice some equipment, dress warm and go hard all night long, end of story. I can appreciate an attempt to make some money for yourself and others, but do it respectably. The Mogul Smoker is already a donation to our town, so basically you’re ripping off one charity to give to another. You would love to see it be a “great” party…like what? Like a rock concert? A rave perhaps? Its the Mogul Smoker and it is what it is, and it remains that way because it has always been a great party! The Mogul Smoker is about sacrifices, not monetary gain or even compensation. I believe that your party will be a great success, I appreciate the effort to bring Fernie a well organized, enjoyable event but to claim The Mogul Smoker as your own is where you went wrong. I say after this fraud, we all get together and do it properly. I’m disgusted with The Royal, I’m disgusted by the intrusion of these new Mogul Smoker “organizers” and I hang my head in shame for The Griz. Sorry Big Guy. Please bring the snow anyways.gavitronParticipantI couldn’t agree more. Being a local, I can’t say that I like paying higher prices for snowboarding, but I can say that I have noticed the positive impact that tourism, fueled mostly by our ski hill, has had on our little town. Growing up, I wasn’t so sure that I would be able to remain in Fernie if I wanted to do something other than work at a mine forever. But now more and more opportunities are becoming available and I am managing to keep myself afloat doing other things. Another thing to take into consideration is that perhaps the people running the ski hill know a little bit more about how to run a ski hill than most of us. I’m sure if they thought that raising their prices would stop a significant amount of people from coming, they wouldn’t have done it. And incase you all haven’t noticed, prices go up for everything, everywhere, all the time. Did you seriously think that you yould be able to ski for $20 a day forever?
Fernie is an awesome town with awesome things to do. If I’m gonna spend $64 a day, I would rather spend it on a day on our mountain than blow it on alot of things that would be far less satisfying.gavitronParticipantStill got em…$50, yes, $50….you know you wanna….. They work great, a little noisy, but $50…
gavitronParticipantis the math on this right? it’s actually cheaper to buy BOTH of them??
gavitronParticipantHello,
You’re going to want to use the rural route address. Your landlord may already have the key for the box, or perhaps you’ll have to go to the post office and get it, I’d ask my landlord before doing anything. And the mail gets somewhat delivered. It won’t come to your door, but there will be a set of mail boxes somewhere close to your building. Hope you enjoy Fernie!!!Gav
gavitronParticipantI am still looking for one, I seen you posting but the 100 might be alittle small for me :-p
gavitronParticipantDid I miss a message???
Is it….still for sale?? Yes.
Sorry, I’m confusedgavitronParticipantI don’t even know what to say.
Older chicks are awesome.gavitronParticipantWhoa….I shoulda been checking up on this topic.
My original intention with this topic was to have a laugh and share a little sympathy for fellow landlords who have had unfortunate situations with renters.
The advice “if you don’t like renters, stop renting” I find rather amusing. What if we all actually stopped renting? Where are all these people gonna live?
And I don’t recall saying that stoners are bad renters. However if they are renting a house where smoking drugs in the house is not allowed and they agreed to that in their rental agreement, then, in my opinion, that would make them a less than respecatable renter.
And as for using rent money to pay mortgages, I’m missing the part where that becomes a bad idea. Someone else buys your house for you? Thats just stupid! I would much rather pay for it myself. And as far as I know, people don’t get mortgages unless they have the means to pay them. You can’t walk into a bank and say “Hey, I have no money, but if you give me a mortgage, I’ll rent the place out for 20 years until its paid off” Get real, all these landlords can pay their mortgages. None of them rely on renting.
Also, who said anything about ALL renters being bad? I’m a great renter. As was posted previously, whats the problem with paying your rent on time, not wrecking stuff and abiding by any rules you agreed to when you decided to rent the place?
And whos “The Little Guy” Someone who doesn’t make much money? No fancy university degree? Whoever it is, Fernie is definetly not relying on him. People may be trying to take advantage of him, but by no means is he supporting this town.
What a funny place to post an ad looking for a place to rent.gavitronParticipantThis car has been sold, thanks.
gavitronParticipantThe Toyota is still available.
I have always had the papers for the mustang.gavitronParticipantThe unfortunate part of it all is that renting is obviously a big part of our local economy and some of us rely on these people to come to Fernie with their rent money. If we attracted nice, family orientated people it would be a win win situation. However, what our town offers is attractive to the kind of people we’re complaining about right now. Until I can find a less risky option, I’m just going to have to keep taking the good with the bad.
I recently spent some time in Texas, and almost every younger person I met down there, after filling them in as to where I was from, responded with “Sweet, I hear you guys have some unreal weed up there!” It has given me the impression that perhaps skiing and mountain biking might not be the only thing that attracts all these people to Fernie. I’m not a big fan of the drug scene, but it we go ahead and legalize marijuana, I might have to switch from real estate to agriculture!gavitronParticipantyes
gavitronParticipantI’m local, so don’t act surprised about this response:
I venture out on the town only a couple times a month, when you’ve been in Fernie forever, the whole get wasted every night and talk about all the great f*ckin snow routine gets old after awhile. So I go to the Fernie on a random night, where I am greated by the bouncers who charge me $5 to get in because some guy is having a jam session with his buddy on the stage. I paid this WIL guy $5 so I could listen to him play random crap for half an hour. “And now, my friend is gonna hammer on his drums as hard as he can!! WOOO!!!” I appreciate the effort, but don’t insult me. If you ask me, stick to the weekend nights when Jim’s DJing, you don’t have to pay to get in and you might be able to have some fun. But don’t wear a coat, that costs $2 too. Sorry, I’ll stop ranting. WIL can play the guitar, and sometimes he does it realllly fast, thats more than I can say for myself. My vote goes to Cher. -
