easy to do. The quickest way is to fly into Cranbrook (an Air Canada flight from Vancouver). From Cranbrook it is an hour to Fernie. Then you could take the Greyhound here, better than the 8hr trip from Calgary. Also, lots of people from Fernie go to and from Cranbrook all the time, so hitching could be an option, or posting on this forum to see if anyone will be there the same time as you.
Calgary is the next option, 3hrs from Fernie. Lots of shuttles buses going to and from Fernie…about $60 or so to do that.
Once you’re here, cheap accommodation is at the Raging Elk hostel. And it’s not too cold inside, you’ll be fine!!! from what I hear, I believe they provide bedding anyway.
