I attended last Friday’s Grand Opening for Wally’s Barbershop in the Henderson Building in Historic Downtown Fernie. Heritage, authenticity, and walk-in service immediately struck me as defining characteristics of this iconic Fernie shop. Wally, the original owner of Walter’s Barbershop, had been quietly searching for “the right person” to take over his beloved local business. By chance, Mikey Conroy, freshly relocated from Toronto, was playing softball with mutual friends who recognized the perfect opportunity: “You’d be perfect!” they insisted.

Encouraged by their enthusiasm, Mikey walked right into Walter’s Barbershop, introduced himself, and quickly became the proud new owner. Wanting to honor Wally’s legacy while making his own mark, Mikey renamed the shop “Wally’s,” paying homage to its former owner.

Adding to the shop’s authentic vintage charm, Mikey purchased Wally’s antique Hanson barber chair, a treasured piece over 100 years old. Soon after, he uncovered another gem—an even older Hanson chair from the 1800s, previously owned by Patsy Caravetta, who operated the shop decades earlier when it was known simply as Patsy’s. Patsy’s brother, Sam Caravetta, now in his 90s, recently visited the shop, delightfully reconnecting with history by sitting in his brother’s original chair.

Redecorating the space has clearly been an exciting journey for Mikey, who is dedicated to preserving the vintage atmosphere that reflects Fernie’s rich community heritage. A longtime customer shared with me that he’s been getting haircuts at this very spot for an astounding 70 years!
Mikey Conroy expressed deep gratitude to be entrusted with this cherished Fernie tradition, promising to carry it forward with respect and enthusiasm for many years to come. I highly recommend walking into Wally’s at 581 2nd Avenue for a haircut steeped in local history and timeless authenticity.
