Park Place Lodge
Special Weather Statement

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the Elk Valley, where the heaviest precipitation is anticipated tonight through Monday morning as a result of two separate frontal systems moving through.

The highest precipitation totals are expected to be over Fernie and Morrissey. By the end of the weekend, these locations could receive in excess of 50 mm.

Potential Impacts:
The combination of heavy rainfall and melting snowpack increases the risk of pooling water and localized flooding. Residents, especially those in low-lying and historically flood-prone areas, should remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Safety Recommendations:
Stay Informed: Regularly monitor updates from Environment Canada and local authorities for the latest information.

Prepare Your Property: Ensure that drainage systems are clear of debris, and consider using sandbags in areas susceptible to flooding.

Exercise Caution: Avoid driving or walking through flooded areas, as water depth and road conditions can be deceptive and hazardous.

For more detailed information and updates, visit Environment Canada’s official website.

The City of Fernie has opened a self-fill sandbag station next to the City’s Operations Yard on Railway Avenue for anyone who lives in areas that are prone to flooding. The sandbag station has sand and bags, with residents required to bring their own shovel and gloves.

If you see – or are experiencing – widescale flooding, please call the 24 hour emergency reporting line at 250-489-9677.

And Avalanche Canada has posted that avalanche terrain should be avoided.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or post reports on social media using #BCStorm.

Stay safe and prepared during this period of inclement weather.
