Snowfall Warning
A Snowfall Warning for Fernie in mid-February isn’t bad news — it’s a celebration of winter’s return!

Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Snowfall Warning for the Elk Valley, calling for 10 to 20 centimetres of fresh snow beginning this afternoon and continuing through Tuesday afternoon. Forecast confidence is high, and in mountain terms, that means it’s time to dust off the snow blower and send a text to your buddies.

An incoming low-pressure system is set to roll into southeastern B.C. later today. Snowfall will intensify this evening, stack up overnight, and gradually taper Tuesday afternoon as the system slides east toward the Prairies. As always in the mountains, totals will vary depending on elevation and microclimate — but fresh snow is coming.

For those of us who choose to live in a place where winter defines the rhythm of life, this is the kind of “warning” that keeps the town smiling. Restaurants fill up after storm days. Skis are waxed. Trails reset. The familiar quiet returns as flakes soften rooftops and mute the trains.

Of course, mountain living comes with responsibility. Visibility may drop during heavier bursts tonight. It’s the usual February reminder that driving in the Elk Valley requires patience and attention. Give yourself extra time, turn on your headlights, ease off the throttle, and leave space between you and the vehicle ahead. Winter rewards respect. And when planning an adventure be sure check the avalanche forecast, January’s frost layer calls for respect.

Highway 93 through Kootenay National Park could see particularly challenging conditions during peak snowfall periods, and local travel throughout the valley may slow as accumulation builds.

But let’s be honest — a Snowfall Warning in Fernie is rarely met with dread. It’s part of the social contract of living here. We accept the shovelling because we love the powder days. We slow down because we know what fresh snow means for the mountains that frame our town.

Winter isn’t finished yet. And in Fernie, that’s very good news and when you add in the Fernie Factor we could be in for a lot of fun!
