Regional Wildfire Update

The Regional Wildfire Update for Fernie includes two active fires, with the fire hazard across much of the East Kootenay rated High to Extreme under continued hot, dry weather. Please keep campfires small, have water/shovel ready, and soak–stir–soak until the ashes are cool to the touch before leaving. Here are the current wildfires, prohibitions and area restrictions for the Southeast Fire Centre as posted by BC Wildfire Service.

Door Cutoff Road / West of Loon Lake (Grasmere) — Incident N11789
• New start Saturday; estimated ~12 hectares; suspected lightning.
• No structures threatened at this time.
• Two initial-attack crews on the ground with heavy equipment; aircraft supported suppression through the afternoon/evening.
• Activity is expected to pick up in late afternoons over the next few hot, dry days.

Silver Basin Wildfire (south of Bugaboos Provincial Park) — Incident N21687
•Estimated 120 hectares (Aug 30 update).
• Evacuation Alert issued by the RDEK for areas south of where Bugaboo Creek Road meets Septet Creek to the Bugaboo Provincial Park boundary (includes Bugaboo Falls Rec Site, Bugaboo Septet Rec Site, CMH Lodge, and 1700/1710/1750 Bugaboo Creek FSR).
• Area Restriction is in effect and has been expanded; check the official bulletin and map for the latest boundaries.
• Terrain is difficult/inaccessible. One IA crew and one unit crew responding; aviation resources available as needed.
