The City of Fernie will be starting a phased approach to re-opening outdoor recreation amenities beginning on Friday, May 15.

As we move forward as a community to a new normal amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the success of our re-opening requires us to all work together to ensure a safe experience for everyone. Please keep the following guidelines in mind as you return to recreating in shared spaces:
– Maintain your distance
– Keep your circle small to protect those closest to you
– No league or organized play
– Respect signage and facility closures
– Stay home if you are sick
– Wash your hands regularly

In the initial phase of re-opening the City will once again be providing community access to basketball courts, fields (excluding Max Turyk Soccer Pitch which is closed for maintenance), pickleball courts, tennis courts, frisbee golf, ball diamonds and the pump track at the Fernie Bike Park. The off-leash designation at the Rail Yard Dog Park has also been restored.

All City of Fernie parks, greenspace and trails have remained open through this public health emergency and will continue to be open for public enjoyment.

The following amenities remain closed: Playgrounds, the Skate Park, the jump line at the Fernie Bike Park, the Spray Park, all washrooms and the sani-dump. The off-leash designation at the Annex Dog Park remains suspended.

All School District five fields, playgrounds and other facilities remain closed until further notice.

In coordination with our regional partners in the East Kootenay, we will be launching a Community Ambassador program in the coming weeks to help with the re-opening of high traffic and higher-risk amenities.

This future phase of re-opening will depend on the success of the initial phase and will be done in coordination with our regional partners based on Provincial guidance.
