Let’s remember and celebrate Nell Smith, a brilliant young artist whose debut solo album, Anxious, will be released on April 11th. This album, the project she had been working on up until her passing, is a testament to her creativity, passion, and undeniable talent.
It is both a beautiful achievement and a heartbreaking reality—Nell never got the chance to see how much people love it. She struggled with imposter syndrome, not realizing just how special this album truly is. But make no mistake—Anxious is extraordinary.
Here is the title track pre-release video:
The Journey Behind Anxious
Nell’s musical journey began with Where the Viaduct Looms, her collaboration with The Flaming Lips, which gained international recognition. While continuing to develop her own sound, Nell worked with Fernie’s own Shred Kelly, creating early demos that caught the attention of Simon Raymonde of Bella Union. He encouraged her to collaborate with Jack and Lily Wolter of Penelope Isles, a decision that proved to be a perfect match. The result is an album full of emotion, playful melodies, and Nell’s distinctive teenage perspective, making it both deeply personal and universally relatable.
This short documentary follows Nell Smith during the run up to her first live shows with The Flaming Lips in May 2022.
A Lasting Legacy
Though Nell is no longer here to witness the impact of her work, her music lives on. All profits from Anxious will go directly to The Nell Smith Memorial Fund, supporting young musicians who need a helping hand.
