A Fernie skiing incident on February 5 has left the community mourning the sudden loss of Betty Anne Flaherty, just one week before her 61st birthday.
Elk Valley RCMP confirmed that she sustained fatal injuries following a fall while skiing at Fernie Alpine Resort. Police attended the scene to assist the BC Coroners Service in its investigation. After speaking with witnesses and reviewing the circumstances, investigators determined she fell while descending a run in the Sib Ridge area and slid into trees.
Conditions on the mountain that day were reported to be especially challenging, with firm and icy surfaces.
“It appears she lost control during her descent and, after falling, slid into trees,” said Sgt. Svend Nielsen of the Elk Valley RCMP. “Our thoughts are with her loved ones and all those affected by this loss.”
Emergency responders, including Fernie Ski Patrol and BC Emergency Health Services, attended quickly and provided care at the scene.
She found deep joy in the mountains and the alpine landscape that meant so much to her. Those who knew her say the outdoors was central to her life in Fernie, and that connection to place makes this loss especially difficult.
The community extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, rescuers and all who are grieving.
