With a federal election approaching, the Fernie Pride Society is taking action to support Vote Rainbow Equality as part of the Queer Day of Action on Sunday, March 23, from 2-4 p.m. The initiative aims to raise awareness of increasing hate toward queer and trans people while mobilizing voters to elect politicians who will uphold human rights and equality for all Canadians.
Concerns over rising anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and discrimination have prompted organizations across the country to push for greater political accountability. Vote Rainbow Equality is calling on elected officials to recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion, emphasizing that human rights benefit everyone and that leaders must actively address discrimination, violence, and hate.
A Community Call to Action
As part of the Queer Day of Action, Fernie residents are encouraged to participate by picking up and distributing flyers and posters in support of rainbow equality. The event aims to increase voter awareness and ensure that issues affecting 2SLGBTQIA+ communities remain a priority in the upcoming election.
Organizers are requesting RSVPs to help determine printing needs. Those interested in supporting the campaign can register online at: Vote Rainbow Equality – Fernie
A Nationwide Movement for Equality
The push for rainbow equality extends beyond Fernie, as advocacy groups across Canada call for action against rising discrimination. The Coalition for Rainbow Equality, which includes the Society of Queer Momentum and partner organizations, is urging politicians at all levels to advance policies that protect marginalized communities and combat misinformation.
With affordability, healthcare, and housing already top concerns for many voters, supporters argue that equality must remain at the forefront of political discussions. The movement calls on elected officials to focus on uniting communities rather than using divisive rhetoric that fosters fear and exclusion.
Ongoing Engagement
For those unable to attend the Queer Day of Action, additional ways to support the initiative include:
• Engaging in conversations about equality and encouraging voter participation.
• Following and amplifying Rainbow Equality’s advocacy efforts.
• Holding elected officials accountable for their commitments to diversity and inclusion.
The Fernie Pride Society and Vote Rainbow Equality continue to advocate for a future where people of all identities can thrive in safe, inclusive communities. More information on the movement and ways to get involved can be found at www.rainbowequality.ca.
