Fernie has received a near record early season snow-pack this November and will be opening for a preview weekend this Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24th.
Early season skiing has been great, the Griz obviously has been happy. The 1.5 meter base will offer some decent soft snow at higher elevations with groomed skiing on the lower two/thirds of the mountain. Here is a shot taken at mid-mountain this Wednesday.
In this picture you can see frozen tracks from earlier in the week and the rain troughs from two days of heavy rain this Monday and Tuesday on the lower mountain. So expect early season conditions up high with hard ice on the lower mountain. The lifts that will be in operation are: Elk Chair, Bear Chair, Boom Chair and Haul with groomed Runs in Lizard and Cedar Bowl plus Lower Mountain. Services at the hill will be limited however Downtown Fernie is in full swing as usual.
This great early season base will yield some excellent powder skiing when the next snow cycle arrives. For now the snow pillow data positions us above average, see below. Fernie’s Mogul Smoker party to honour the Griz and celebrate the early season snow-pack is being held this Saturday. Enjoy!
