A fatal collision on Highway 3 near Sparwood brought traffic to a standstill on Sunday afternoon, prompting RCMP to renew their call for winter driving caution as conditions deteriorate across the Elk Valley.
Elk Valley Regional RCMP say they were called to the crash at around 1:20 p.m. on November 30th, after two vehicles collided near Corbin Road, east of Sparwood. One driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was airlifted to Alberta by STARS Air Ambulance with serious injuries.
“This is a tragic incident, and our priority right now is supporting the investigation and notifying the families involved,” police said in a statement. BC Ambulance Service and Sparwood Fire Rescue also responded.
UPDATE: Highway 3 has been reopened for about an hour to single-lane alternating traffic, with assistance from Mainroads, but RCMP say the route will be closed again briefly once the BC Coroner’s Service arrives to support the investigation. Police have notified the families of those involved, and one family member is currently on scene with officers. The second driver, who survived the collision, has been airlifted by STARS to a Calgary hospital for further treatment. RCMP confirm that only two people were involved, each the sole occupant and driver of their respective vehicles. Once the Coroner’s investigation is complete and the vehicles are removed, Highway 3 will fully reopen. Travellers are asked to check DriveBC for updates. Elk Valley RCMP extend their condolences to the family of the deceased as the investigation continues.
RCMP used the opportunity to remind travellers that early-winter conditions can change rapidly, especially along mountain corridors like Highway 3. “We’re asking drivers to slow down, give themselves extra time, and adjust to the conditions. Defensive driving saves lives,” police said.
Winter Safety Tips for Drivers
• Reduce your speed and increase following distance—winter roads demand more reaction time.
• Install proper winter tires, which are legally required on Highway 3 and essential for traction.
• Check road reports and Highway Webcams before travelling and adjust your schedule if weather deteriorates.
• Plan for delays, carry emergency supplies, and drive defensively around plow trucks and first responders.
As winter storms build across the region, RCMP are urging Elk Valley residents and travellers alike to make safe driving a priority and always check the weather.
