Residents in Elkford will notice a striking tribute to the region’s steelmaking coal industry at their local skating rink, as a brand-new electric Zamboni has been donated to the District of Elkford by Elk Valley Resources (EVR). Designed to resemble a mining haul truck, this carbon-neutral ice resurfacer addition is set to enhance ice quality while reducing the facility’s environmental footprint.
The Zamboni was officially unveiled on February 14, 2025, during Elkford’s Winter in the Wild festivities. This donation aligns with EVR’s ongoing commitment to investing in local communities through sponsorships, programs, and charitable initiatives.

Steve Fairbairn, Mayor of Elkford, emphasized the significance of this donation for the community:“We are excited to introduce the new, carbon-neutral Zamboni to our rink’s fleet—an electrifying addition that brings us closer to Elkford’s sustainable future. This generous donation from Elk Valley Resources underscores their ongoing commitment to our community, both now and in the years to come. Rink users can expect a smoother, higher-quality ice surface, reduced operating costs, and a cleaner, greener environment to skate in.”
Mike Carrucan, CEO of EVR, reinforced the company’s dedication to the Elk Valley region:“As a responsible steelmaking coal producer, EVR is dedicated to the communities where we operate and committed to creating lasting benefits in the Elk Valley. We are proud to provide a new electric ice resurfacer to the District of Elkford as part of our ongoing commitment.”
The new electric Zamboni will be used at the Elkford Recreation Centre, ensuring high-quality ice conditions for hockey, figure skating, and other events throughout the winter sports season. The addition also reflects Elkford’s broader efforts toward sustainability and innovation in municipal services.
This donation further strengthens EVR’s role in supporting Elk Valley communities, contributing to local infrastructure and recreation for years to come.
