Elk Valley RCMP are asking the public for assistance as they continue to investigate a tragic two-vehicle collision that occurred on the evening of June 20, 2025, near Kubinec Road, approximately 10 km south of Fernie along Highway 3.

The crash claimed the life of a 40-year-old man from Bigfork, Montana, who had been driving a black 2015 Chevrolet Cruze with Montana plates. He was travelling eastbound from the U.S./Canada border to Calgary to visit his girlfriend. Following the crash, the victim’s girlfriend attended the scene, where she was supported by Elk Valley RCMP, Victim Services, and staff at Elk Valley Hospital. The man’s family was notified with the assistance of the U.S. Embassy in Vancouver and has since been in contact with RCMP investigators.

The other vehicle involved—a grey 2023 GMC Yukon with Alberta plates—was driven by a 49-year-old woman from Okotoks, Alberta. Witnesses reported seeing a similar vehicle driving erratically near Blairmore, Alberta prior to the crash. The woman sustained serious injuries and was transported to Fernie Hospital for treatment and evaluation. Her family has been contacted.

RCMP have confirmed that alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the collision, although weather and road conditions at the time likely played a role. The highway was immediately shut down following the 6:15 PM incident, with BC Ambulance, Fernie Fire Department, BC Highway Patrol, and Elk Valley RCMP all responding. With no safe detour available, traffic was halted in both directions and backed up for several kilometers. Highway 3 remained closed for most of the night before reopening under Ministry of Transportation oversight.

RCMP are now requesting any additional witness reports or dash camera footage that may help clarify the driving behaviour of either vehicle prior to the crash. Members of the public with information are asked to contact Elk Valley Regional RCMP at 250-425-6233 or to provide tips anonymously via BC Crime Stoppers. Please reference file 2025-1884.

This incident has left a profound impact on those involved and the broader community. RCMP continue to support the families and are committed to a thorough and respectful investigation.
