Training began on Thursday February 27, and the following three days were action packed, with the Super G on Friday, Giant Slalom on Saturday, and Slalom on Sunday. All three races were held on the Bear Run.

The talk of the weekend was Whistler’s Matt Holler, who, with three first place finishes, swept every event. Sun Peaks’ Victoria Glowczynska took first in both the Super G and GS events, with Georgia Simmerling of Grouse Mountain victorious in the Slalom.

Fernie had excellent results all weekend, with Travis Dawson on the podium in third place in the Slalom, and top ten finishes for Dawson and teammate Luke Nelson throughout the weekend. On the women’s side, Fernie’s Jodi Milligan had a top 10 finish in the GS and top 15 in the Super G.

In addition to all the young skiing talent, famous former World Cup and Olympic competitor Rob Boyd was on hand to help out with the event all weekend. Boyd now spends a good part of his time helping to develop Canada’s young skiers.

When asked about the course and conditions in Fernie, Boyd observed that they were a bit of a challenge for competitors, as Fernie’s base was slightly softer than the racers were used to. Fernie’s famous powder, which made a very noticeable appearance Sunday afternoon for the Slalom, contributed to slightly slower finish times for racers.

“But, that’s ski racing,” added Boyd, with characteristic good nature. Commenting on Fernie facilities and hospitality, he said, “it’s been great, absolutely.”

“Most of the athletes and parents went away with good memories of our mountain, our race and Fernie’s hospitality,” said Chief of Race Rod Geddis, “I would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers who gave their time to work on the hill to pull this event off and the dozens of Fernie businesses who donated prizes, coupons and money.”
