Earth Day is coming up fast, and the organizing committee is busy preparing for an exciting week of events. This year we’re going big, and celebrating with a whole week of events from April 16th-22nd 2011. Of course, part of Earth Week celebrations will be our 5th Annual Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show on April 19th.
If you’ve missed the show in previous years, visit our website to see pictures of some of the haute couture created by budding fashion designers in our community! This year, we are challenging the whole community to get involved in Earth Week. Many organizations and businesses are already taking actions in their daily operations hat help reduce our impact on the environment – we want to celebrate those actions, and encourage others to get involved. There are a few ways your business can get involved this year:
• Enter a costume into the Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show.
Your challenge is to create a piece from waste created at your business. (We’ve had a coffee filter sundress, our bag warrior and egg carton ball gown, all from local businesses!). Let us know if you’re in! Deadline for registration is Friday April 15th.
• Design a creative window display. Get creative with your trash, or highlight some of the green products you may have in your store. Help to spread the word about Earth week, and the products you offer to help individuals reduce their impact.
• Join us for a Community Costume Build Workshop to help get your costume started. Join us at the Arts Station on Sunday, April 3, from 2pm to 5pm for a free Community Costume Creation Workshop. All ages are welcome. Come and create, and get a chance to speak to previous years contestants.
• Advertise Earth Week and the Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show. Help us spread the word and get lots of community involvement for Earth Week. We’ll provide posters and fashion show application forms for you to distribute.
• Promote your eco friendly practices with an info booth or an ad. Join us at the Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show with an info booth in the evening of Tuesday April 19th, OR secure your ad in the Free Press’s Earth Day supplement; deadline April 1st.
Please send us an email at earthday@fernie.ca to get involved, or visit the www.earthdayfernie.ca to learn more.
We’re looking forward to having you involved in Earth Week this year!
