Winter's Whims

As March unfolds in Fernie, residents and visitors alike find themselves pondering winter’s whims: “Where has winter gone, and will it return?” The recent surge in temperatures has ushered in an early taste of spring, leaving many to question the fate of our beloved winter season. January was exceptionally dry and March was only slightly better – the result is a below average snowpack.

Winter's Whims

Historically, March in Fernie is synonymous with substantial snowfall and prime skiing conditions. Average snow depths have reached up to 267 cm at the summit and 249 cm at the base. However, this year tells a different story. Early March has seen unusually high temperatures, with daytime highs soaring to 13°C (55°F) and nighttime lows barely dipping below freezing. This warmth has accelerated snowmelt, leading to spring-like conditions on the slopes.

Several factors contribute to this unexpected warmth. A dominant ridge of high pressure over the region has resulted in clear skies and increased solar radiation, both of which elevate temperatures. Additionally, the lengthening daylight hours inherent to March further amplify warming trends.

Despite the current mild spell, winter in Fernie is known for its unpredictability. Long-range forecasts suggest a potential return of colder temperatures and snowfall in the latter half of March. The Old Farmer’s Almanac anticipates snowy periods in early March, followed by a mix of showers and cool conditions as the month progresses. Skiers and snowboarders should remain hopeful, as Fernie’s weather can change rapidly, bringing fresh powder when least expected.

While we await winter’s possible resurgence, there’s no need to lament. The current conditions offer unique opportunities to enjoy Fernie’s natural beauty. Spring skiing, characterized by softer snow and longer days, can be equally rewarding. Additionally, activities such as snowshoeing, hiking, and fat biking become more accessible, allowing residents and visitors to experience the diverse recreational options our region provides.

Fernie’s charm lies in its ever-changing seasons and the myriad of activities each brings. Whether winter decides to stage a comeback or spring continues its early march, there’s always something to celebrate in our mountain paradise. Stay tuned to local weather updates and embrace the adventures that each day offers!
