As kids are heading to school this week, we’re sending out this back to school safety reminder to highlight the importance of driving and parking safely in school zones.
School zones have a speed limit of 30 km/h from 8 am to 5 pm on school days. The City of Fernie has radar-equipped speed messaging signs in the IDES school zone on 13th St. Unless otherwise marked, speed limits on Fernie city streets are 40 km/h.
To help make our streets safer for our kids, please be courteous and park responsibly when dropping off or picking up children from school and follow these tips:
• Avoid double parking.
• Watch for signs indicating ‘No Stopping’ and ‘No Parking.’
• Keep school bus zones clear so kids can safely exit the bus.
• Leave 5 meters between your car and any crosswalk markings.
• Leave 5 meters from stop signs, yield signs, or intersections.
• Be courteous to neighbors around schools and don’t block entrances to garages or driveways.
Let’s all do our part to ensure a safe and smooth start to the school year.
Have a wonderful 2024/25 school year!
