Environment Canada is reporting heavy snow as an Arctic front moves across the area with total snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm expected by Saturday morning.

Snow will begin today and become heavy at times tonight as an Arctic front moves across the East Kootenay region. Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm is expected by Saturday morning. The passage of the front will also bring gusty winds, temporarily reducing visibility in blowing snow. Areas susceptible to wind are likely to see the worst conditions in blowing snow.

Fernie Alpine Resorts Mountain Weather Report reports for tonight, “Periods of snow and possible snow showers, possibly heavy at times. Accumulation from 10 to 20 cm. Increasing wind, very high wind chill and possible blowing snow. Low near -15.”

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
