Out of the Box is an art initiative that will brighten the streets this summer in Fernie. Brought to you by a combined effort of the City of Fernie, the Beautification Committee and Southeast Disposal, nine dumpsters in town will be painted by local talent. The list of artists partaking are as follows: Kate Middleton, Liam Monahan, The Fernie Academy, Pamm Ciupa, Anna Weston, Laura Nelson, Jacqueline Mann, Aidan Lindsay, and Brina Schenk.
On July 6th, these artists will make their visions come to life and compete for a $500 People’s Choice Award, donated by The Fernie & District Arts Council. The event will take place in Station Square downtown Fernie where spectators can see the work in progress. Viewers can also participate by painting their own piece on a square on the “Community Canvas”. Once completed, the dumpsters will be located in various locations around town.
The program is similar to those in larger cities such as Vancouver and Calgary that have recruited artists for painting electrical boxes. It’s a great way to liven otherwise mundane city objects and add a vibrant flair to the streets. In Fernie, it also gives exposure to the rich artistic talent that thrives in town. The Fernie & District Art Council and a volunteer committee will provide facilitation and the dumpsters are donated by Southeast disposal.
