Celebrate our connection to the ribbon of life that links residents along the Elk Rive – the lifeblood of our community.

Saturday September 24

1:00-4:00 p.m. “Citizen Stream Science on Lizard Creek” at Mount Fernie Provincial Park day use area: The Elk River Alliance Lizard Creek Streamkeepers and BC Parks invite the public to the fall sampling day. Be a water scientist and get wet with hands-on stream science taking water quality tests, flow rates, mapping measurements and sampling freshwater creatures. Build a cutthroat kite or create a water critter. Bring a mug for hot chocolate and a snack. Take in a demonstration and presentation by Master Flyfisher John Poirier, learning to think like a trout. Rubber boots, waders and waterproof clothes recommended.

Submit photos by September 20, 2011. “For the Love of the Elk Photo Contest” Submit your photos of scenery, wildlife, people and sports on the Elk River. Prizes will be awarded in each category and an audio-visual presentation will be presented at the Our River Rocks Social. Submit your photos to ayla@elkriveralliance.ca or drop them off at 891 2nd Ave, Fernie.

All Day – “Art on the Elk”: Take out your easel, camera, clay or sketch-pad and be inspired to create work celebrating the Elk River. Works can be developed over the winter and submitted to the Elk River Art Project as part of a feature display Spring 2012.

7:00-11:00 p.m. “Our River Rocks” Social at Rip’n Richards. Tickets $25 includes: Dinner and your first clean, clear local water brewed into beer made by Fernie Brewing Company. Enjoy some Fishy Tall Tales. View displays on the Elk River watershed. Rock the night away with Faceplant. Proceeds support the Elk River Alliance. Everyone welcome.

Sunday September 25

1:00-4:00 p.m. “Annual Elk River Shoreline Cleanup”: Meet at Annex Pond. Adopt a stretch of the Elk River and clean it up with your team for 2 hours. Gloves and bags provided. Deliver your garbage back to the Annex Pond park for a volunteer appreciation BBQ at 3:00 p.m..

4-5:30 p.m. “Water Wonders”: Family aquatic encounter while learning about the cool properties of water, the water cycle, water use and conservation. Games on the deck and in the pool at the Fernie Aquatic Centre. Regular admission applies.
