World Drowning Prevention Day is observed annually on July 25 to raise awareness of the impact of drowning and the practical steps that can save lives.
The World Health Organization estimates that drowning claims more than 300,000 lives each year and remains one of the ten leading causes of death among children aged five to 14. The theme for 2026 is “Unite to Turn the Tide.”
The City of Fernie is hosting educational activities at the Fernie Aquatic Centre to raise awareness about drowning prevention. Each session focuses on a different aspect of water safety.
Water Safety Sessions:
Tuesday, July 21, from 2 to 3 p.m.: Importance of lifejackets
Thursday, July 23, from 2 to 3 p.m.: Open-water safety
Regular admission rates apply.
