A Fall Fernie Mini-Conference “Building the Craft” with Susan Purvis, Keith Liggett and Danielle Gibson.

Nov. 8, 9, 10th the Fernie Writers Conference will hold a mini-conference at the Fernie Alpine Resort. There will only be three sections—a total of sixteen adult slots and ten youth.

Creative Non-Fiction with Susan Purvis. (Limited to 8) Tuition: $250
The travails of writing authentically in a memoir are many. Detail? Too much? Too little? The arcs of a life are many and how do we weave them into a compelling narrative.
Bestselling author Sue Purvis found a new direction when three young children were buried plying outside their condo at Crested Butte Resort. Two were rescued and one died. That incident prompted her to find a puppy and start on the difficult road to certifying a rescue dog. While training and passing tests were difficult, breaking into the male dominated Ski Patrol/Search and Rescue community was even more difficult. Go Find follows the journey of Tasha and Susan in achieving the goal of leaving no one behind.
Sebastian Junger called Go Find, “A brave and profound book.”

Fiction and Poetry—Mixed genres with Keith Liggett (limited to 8) Tuition: $250
Mixing genres in one group facilitates critique. The poets bring a word sensibility. The prose writers a feeling for arc. Together they share and build on their strengths.
For over thirty years Keith Liggett has organized and taught writers’ workshops in the US and Canada. He has published five books including two collections of poetry and the award-winning Island Lake Lodge: the cookbook. Recently, Keith was elected President of the Federation of BC Writers.

Youth Sessions with Danielle Gibson (limited to 10) Tuition: $50
With gentle, but firm critique, Danielle Gibson’s Youth Session mixes writing exercises with sharing of current work to develop a strong feeling of craft and the ability to work independently on writing projects.
Danielle Gibson teaches at Fernie Secondary School. Her three book YA series is currently agented in New York and seeking a publisher.
