Once in Fernie you will find several choices to have a pint or two. I recommend checking out the Griz Bar for an apres ski drink and some nachos. From there, there are some great pubs and one club in Fernie. The Grand Central and The Fernie have fun pub atmospheres and a visit to the Eldorodo (the only club in Fernie) is a must. Have fun.

Does anyone remember a bar called the Livery? I used to go occasionally back around 1980 when I worked close to Fernie.

Yes I do remember it when it was the Livery then it was called T bars then it was closed for quit a while and a gift shop was opened in there. After the gift shop I think the Island Lake office was in there ,and then it was opened as the Eldorodo

Yes, the nightclub in the livery building is still the Eldorado. There is a really good restaurant upstairs called the Wood.

talk to people on the hill, back in December my sis and a friend went out to a kegger and house party that started at the hostel in town I think, and then last weekend their was a kickass 40 oz. party that a bunch of Aussie’s threw! Just talk to people if nothing else

Oh, I get it…..these are basically people who live in British Columbia?

No need to get uptight. Every ski town around the world has kids who move in, are trying to find themselves, want to run away from responsibility, while pursuing their passion for skiing. Nothing unusual with that. I see lots of Granolas when I ski in Colorado, Utah, and parts of Idaho. I actually like the Granolas. Much nicer than the hillbillies from the Australian outback who visit your beautiful country just to piss on it.

So it sounds like you have real issues with the Eldorado Lounge. Are there other places in town to hang out, experience live music, consume alcohol and have a good time?

Here is my question to you: As a ski town, where in Fernie are young people who are cool, don’t wear salvation army clothes, smell like Abercrombie, go to Ivy League schools and have lots of money supposted to hang out??

..I have heard that the “Royal” is a good spot to tee-it-up after a full day of skiing waist deep in powder!!!

Anybody know how Island Lake Lodge does in the Winter months? I have heard that they get some good bands from time to time and that the food is very good – I would guess this is likely for special events?

      Peace.

      Hey Deelite,

The only way to get to Island Lake Lodge in the winter is by snowmobile or snowcat (snowshoe or x-country skies if your adventurous). Its an 8km grated winter road that the staff, day skiers, and package skiers take. For all I know visitors are not allowed in winter.

This changes in the summer you can hike, bike or drive up to the lake and enjoy the awesome eats. Yes they do have a festival each year, but its in the summer.

This doesn’t mean that you couldn’t treat yourself to a day of Catskiing!

Granola, funny! You must be one jaded person Alycia.

      Griz-Boy,

Nice!! Sounds beautiful. I will need to visit this “Island Lake Lodge” and experience the cat skiing for myself. The more remote the better. Right? I will have to plan for this during my couple of weeks holiday to Fernie next year (March 2005).

What’s that Festival like in the Summer? Any live music? Any Jambands around the region?

      Peace

      Deelite,
You’ll get a kick out of the padded headrests that are provided above the urinals in the men’s bathroom at the Royal; one for shorter people and the other for taller people. I laughed my ass off the first time I walked in and saw them. The Royal is a nice place to “tee-it-up” and shoot pool with some of the locals.
Eldo is cool, too. I saw some really good live music there the last time I was in Fernie. I’m not sure what that other chick’s problem is. If she doesn’t like the “granola” types, well then, she should go to Vail or Aspen instead.
The Grand Central Hotel down on the west end of 2nd Ave. is another nice place to hang out as well. Probably one of the nicer bar/restaurant establishments in downtown. They usually have DJs there spinning vinyl on any given night of the week and there is a heavy European contingent that frequents this place because one of the owners, Lillis, is from Sweden. Her husband, Claude, is French Canadian. Very nice people. Check it out when you get there.

      Cheers,
      Bob

      Well said Griz-Boy….well said. Bravo!!

      Alycia,
It is quite transparent from your postings that you have a very large “chip” on your shoulder.

I have never come across people who live in Fernie that share your views. In fact, my experience has been quite the contrary. At first I thought your anger might be a result of the bitter cold in Ft. McMurray that’s made you this way…but in fact, I am quite convinced now that it’s really just a reflection of your ignorance.

Lots of jam bands in the winter, The Royal was cool because they had there jam night. Anything went, you could walk up and belt out a few lines or learn to play the bass guitar. Too bad the Royal might not be this winter, looks like it is for sale. The new Northern is gettin renovated and will feature a stage and dance floor, so I think those guys will take over.

Don’t forget Kareokee (spelling?) at The Fernie Pub.

Ahh it’s all fun when you hang out with fun people!

the funny thing is that although every one keeps saying “hillbillies from the outback” most of the aussies you see probably aren’t from the outback! Hardly anyone (as a percentage) in australia lives further than say 4 hours from the nearest coast

the funny thing is that “hillbillies from the outback” is refering to Australia as a whole. Not a place specific in Australia but Australia’s place in the rest of the world. After all , didn’t you guys just get cable 4 or 5 years ago?

nah probly got cable over ten years ago now. not everyone has it though, i don’t and i don’t really want it that much, it’s mostly all just b grade american crap anyway.

well you referring to all australians as “hillbillies from the outback” is just as ignorant as “the hillbillies of the outback who only come here to piss on our country.”

Sorry Toddo I guess I should have wrote “hillbillies from the outback” instead. I was only quoting to make a point, My bad for not using the “”. My point is Deelite can spend all her time going after Alysha and calling her ignorant for using the word granola but then she herself can assume that all Aussies are from “the outback” (which Im sure she only knew about because of the reality show), and that all they do is piss on our country. Didn’t mean to offend.[/quote:23p1k8bj]

hahaha nah that’s cool!! i wasn’t offended just making a point! i know i’m not an outback hillbilly so it’s ok. lol.

what reality TV show was that?? survivor i’m guessing???

[b:2rebjyr4] sparkes, good way to put all your definitions. it was perfect. i would also like to just put in a comment about the eldorado. i had to use their atm machine inside once and it does have a terrible odour. think wet dog x 10[/b:2rebjyr4]

if you want sterility, no “smells”, no atmosphere, a basic cookie-cutter watering hole try Boston Pizza, Kelsey’s or The Pub. if you want to enjoy a pint in an atmosphere oozing in history well go to any of the other pubs and yes, the eldorado. and no i’m not spiting the generic 3, i frequent them from time to time, it’s just a matter of likes, dislikes and moods. regardless, there’s something for everyone.

The best way to do it is to ask a local. I am guessing that it will be a group of university students looking to get messed up. Best way then is ask one of the young people in the hotel. or a liftie, or someone at the daylodge. or go to one bar, and ask the waitress, they are usually pretty honest

Lets face it. fernie is a cool place to go out in if you want to get pissed on pale ale and play pool with some like minded people. By the way, am i the only one who gets gut rot from Fernie Pale Ale??

I mean when you get there on that particula night as really it depends on that night that you are going out.

And Fernie beer is the worst stuff in the world. Goes down semi alright but I know I feel it in the morning worse than any other beer I have drank

The Wood is on the hill now in the Griz Inn.

The nightlife in Fernie is pretty limited but here is a bit of low-down:

Most of the locals go to the [b:690jfdgm]Fernie[/b:690jfdgm] since the ‘Northern’s gone now. has pool table. (has smoking room)

[b:690jfdgm]The Pub[/b:690jfdgm] (Park Place Lodge) gets a little of everyone but closes earlier than all the rest so then everyone moves on somewhere else. has pool tables and fooseball. gets very busy! (has smoking room)

[b:690jfdgm]The Eldorado[/b:690jfdgm] is either packed full of people or there’s no one there and its narrow and yeah it does stink and the sound sucks bad! Usually way too loud and distorted. However they do get some good bands in there so watch out for those nights. (no smoking)

[b:690jfdgm]The Central[/b:690jfdgm] again gets a little of everyone but usually a more sophisticated crowd. It has a very nice interior and is probably my favorite place to go. They have pool tables and fooseball. (no smoking)

[b:690jfdgm]The Royal[/b:690jfdgm] is alright, can get pretty busy though so you might wnat to get there early. The only thing about the Royal is its a bitch to get a drink cause there is this huge rock pillar in the way and they have too many tables in there. Usually there is a Jam night on Thursdays. (smoking on balcony)

The is a new bar, i forget what its called, thats opened where the old ‘Northern’ used to be. Its all been redone this summer although i havent set foot in there yet, its supposed to be much much nicer. (prob no smoking)

** Remember there is no smoking in bars and restaurants in BC unless there is a completely seperate room with ventaliation designed for smoking.

      k..woah I havent replyed in a while..
      Sorry…
but lol..I really have nothing against granolas..I have to admit..I did hang out with them while I was living there…and I call everyone who hasnt grown up in Fernie, and just moves there to use the hill and plant trees a granola..so dont take it personally..(I did actually date a snowboard bum..he turned out to be the best bf I could ever ask for, but he isnt around anymore, I dont know if anyone would know him..he lived there for a couple years..worrked at the old elevator..was roomates with a guy named Ryan Poole..anyways..hes gone now..may he RIP)
but there are those ones that do “live to ski and board” they dont care about hygiene(sp?) lol..and for that, I will have to call my brother a granola..he was one of the biggest there :P
anyways..sorry for before and being a snob or whatever..I just miss my home town..its been like a few years since I’ve been there, and it would be good to just come back and hang out with all my old friends..
I will hopefully be around this summer…to see some friends..check out the new places and stuff..maybe have a few drinks..
      anyways…
have a good winter..I hear you guys dont have much snow..
I’ll pray to the snow gods for ya!

Yep, Eldo sucks ass as I read in these posts..hahaha. I do not think it is actually the Eldo itself, as much as a couple of the little twerps they got working there who think they are “The Man”, just because they have a job as a bouncer. (only a couple not all of them)I bet some are only 19 ot 20 and weigh about 95 lbs..I just have issues with the little powertrips they go on while at work. The last couple times I was there I was treated rudely and witnessed others being treated like crap, AND HAD DONE NOTHING TO DESERVE IT.
