Unhappy communities are unhappy for a single reason: miss-government.
For many years the local governments of Fernie have failed to address the needs of the community. Physical infrastructure, planning, community values and honesty have failed. Most recently the situation has worsened with the dismal leadership and corruption of our mayor, his council and administration.
The community of Fernie no longer exists, except as a cultural ghost for tourists. Locals are quickly leaving to find community elsewhere and are being replaced by Calgary’s second home owners and international destination investors.
The “legends” remain only as culture to be marketed to future visitors by developers and their corrupt political associates.
Where will it end, where is it now; one unhappy community where locals are leaving daily. From the perspective of locals the community of Fernie no longer exists.

I’m a local. Things evolve, get over it. There are a ton more small towns that are exactly like Fernie used to be. Its your life, if thats what makes you happy you might as well go follow the others. As for me, I’ll be staying. This place is beautiful.

Fernie is not the problem. You need to look farther than that, you need to see the real mismanagement. Look at the Regional and Provincial governments for that. I’m not sure but in the last ten years or so, the entire East Kootenays seem to have been neglected. Or put on hold for one reason or another. But Fernie has evolved and still moved on to the World map. The real tragedy in Fernie is the loss of schools, loss of full time paramedics, loss of beds in our hospitals, possible loss of the Flathead, the complete mismanagement of flood planning since 95 and so on and so on. Fernie will always be Fernie to the People that live here. I’ve only been in Fernie for 10 years, but the people that truly come from Fernie are the hardest working and most caring people in this community. If you have their backs they will have yours. So I guess what I’m trying to say is look around. It is more than a Mayor and a town council that run Fernie. If you think you can change the future of this community; Do it, Run For Mayor.

YUP!! You hit the nail on the head! Fernie is sooo rad, been here fer 9yrs and seen it dwindle to an economical monstrosity….the mayor and his greedy regime are the suck-hole of this awesome, magnificent mountain town! $$$$$$$$$$ It’s all about $$$$$$$$$$$$! The people of this town are amazing with the exception of the zombified-money-hungry rent bastards!! All in all FERNIE ROCKS!!! IMPEACH THE MAYOR!!
PS RE-PAVE THE DAMN ROADS TOO, WORLD CLASS TOWN WITH WORLD CLASS POTHOLES!!
