I came to fernie last October for my 4th season doing the back to back winter thing from the southern hemisphere hoping to have an awesome winter as I have had in fernie many times before but something I have really noticed over the last couple of years is the growing use hard drugs in the town which is a real shame.
This season however I just might of been unlucky but I rented out a place and filled it with some flatmates who seemed cool at first only to start with the regular use of E’s and Coke bringing random people around to our place and snorting crap night after night on our dining table to where it got to the point we had enough and with a limited budget leaving us unable to do a mid season switch to another pad so we pulled the plug and came back home which unfortunately means we missed all the powder you guys got through January.
The thing I want to point out here is that that users were not locals or even canadians that were coming around to our place but I know that the drugs were being purchased from a local. it’s a real shame too seee fernie slipping this way as I know our place wasn’t the only one with this happening and it’s really taking away from the “real” ski town that fernie was in my eyes and should be still today.
It was one of the hardest things i have had to do picking up mid season and leaving a dream but when it comes down to it we just had to much to lose should things get nasty as the way they were heading. Has anyone else noticed a rise in the use of drugs in town over the last couple of years? I think this is a community problem for fernie and one that you should deal with soon as it’s ruining the magic ski town feeling that fernie once had.
P.S. To all of the people in fenrie enjoying a long overdue season hope you are all lovin it and getting in many freshies but please guys take control of this situation before it takes fernie down to a place no one wants to visit or live.

Of course Fernie has a drug problem, but what city, town, or village doesn’t. Like come on you should of screened your flat mates before moving in with them. My roomates are awesome and its not like I was lucky cause its been like that for awhile.

Take control of the situation?? Sure, we’ll get right on that simple endeavor!
As someone who grew up in Fernie I know hard drugs have been a part of the scene for years and have had a few shocking experiences of my own.
It truly sucks when you realize that the town you deamed so pure and innocent is just as affected with drug use and dealing as any other little town, or city for that matter. Hopefully you also realize that your view was a bit unrealistic. The only thing you can control is yourself: you have a choice in friends and the option to be vocal about your beliefs. And hey, it’s Fernie. Those who truly love the town and live for the town will keep it real.

Harmful, hard drug use is everybodys problem.
Miseducation has led to this. Hopefully education can aid in it’s recovery.
How many people really wanted to be “crack heads” in the first place? Probably none.
The problem is societies responsibility, we must all hope to have a hand in properly educating or medicating those in need.Dont turn a blind eye or act as if it’s someone elses responsibility.
Some of the most successful people in the world have been so, along side their addictions.
I have noticed serious increases in hard users as well as I have aged. I have no need for such luxury as coke personaly. Nor would I want to try anything chemical.
IMO – If marijuana had been legalized back in 2001, the people whom are becoming societies problems, would have been treated into treatment programs, and monitored by now. I blame miseducating commercial and american based anti drug programs.
These people do need to help themselves. I hope proper civil conversation and science, can help.

Powderpig, who did you report said drug use to? Do the RCMP know that your rental is now a coke house? Did you ever find out where the drugs where coming from, and report them to the RCMP for supplying?
Of course not, you’re a cool guy right, you wouldn’t snitch on anyone!!! So what exactly are we supposed to do? Roam the streets at night with pitchforks and sniffer dogs?
I’ve seen this issue mentioned several times and it’s clear that a lot of people think we have a problem, as do most small towns and big cities and pretty much everywhere there are people, but unless you are prepared to actually do something concrete, like report people, then you’re wasting your breath.
Powderpig, you made a mistake leaving. The snow is awesome!
