My roof is leaking into my living room once again from ice damming. The roofer who laid my roof presented himself as a knowledgeable contractor however this was not the case.
With ice built up water penetrates the roofing tiles and leaks into my home, I have a chronic roof.
What I learned? Have a building supervisor inspect your roof and define what your requirements are prior to contacting a roofer.
In my case the Ice Guard does not cover the critical melting points on my roof, this could have been avoided by consulting a knowledgeable builder.

One thing that I would do is Ice Guard or shield…, the WHOLE roof and double up any valleys for two courses. Well worth the extra cost in our climate, which happens to be one of the most difficult to deal with water and ice on roofs. This may be seen as overkill by many in the industry, but overkill has kept water out of houses where average practices have failed.

The roofer told me that Ice Guard would be a waste of money. I’m told he is now using Ice Guard on all Elk Valley roofs. Unfortunately my roof is leaking for the 5th time this Winter.
This roofer sees more profit in his next roof than honoring his past work. It’s easier to badmouth the client that take the financial loss.
Be warned of shifty roofers who are concerned more about money than honoring their work.
Don’t "cheap out" or depend on a roofer to define your roofing requirement in this valley, hire a general contractor to define what you require.
There is an honorable and experienced roofing company in Fernie with a business front, do your research before spending your money.

so whts the deal with metal roofs , they seem to be the way to go because all of them next to me have no snow sitting on them , why do people use shingles over metal ? is it just the price point?

i had some roof leakage recently too. so I built a ramp up onto the top of my house so I could get the snowblower up there and clear the meter or so of snowpack from the top. roof is now no longer leaking.

Metal is fine on a steep pitch roof where the snow slides frequently into a predefined space i.e. not your walkway. On a low angle metal roof the snow collects and slides only during large avalanche cycles. These large slides can damage property or seriously hurt somebody.
Metal and shingles cost about the same. The correct choice depends on your roof angle, roof strength, path of potential slides, insulation, and ventilation.
A good material choice as well as other factors is something that a building contractor can help you with. Define what your requirements are and then work with the roofer(s) that the contractor recommends. This policy should keep you safe from using a roofer that is inferior or does not honour their work.
