Wildfires continue to burn across British Columbia, and conditions are expected to worsen with the current weather. Hot, dry, and windy weather is forecast for much of the province, creating ideal conditions for wildfires to ignite and spread rapidly.
Fire danger ratings currently range from moderate to extreme, including areas around Fernie and the Elk Valley. As a result, open fire prohibitions are in place in regions with elevated wildfire risk. Notably, Category 3 open fires are now prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, which includes the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District, Fernie, the Elk Valley, and South Country. Additional fire restrictions are expected to be announced in the coming days.

There are currently three wildfires in the Southeast Fire Centre, all of which are under control. For updates, follow the BC Wildfire Service Map.
Residents are urged to check for current bans and restrictions using the BC Wildfire Service website, the BC Wildfire Service mobile app, or by contacting local authorities for any additional bylaws or fire-use regulations.
Even if certain types of burning are permitted in your area, caution is critical:
• Avoid lighting any fire during windy conditions.
• Keep fires small and under control.
• Always have water and a shovel or tool nearby.
• Fully extinguish fires—ashes must be cold to the touch.
• Never leave a fire unattended.
For detailed tips on safe outdoor burning, visit the BC Wildfire Service open burning safety page.
By staying informed and following local fire prohibitions and best practices, you can help reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and protect both the Fernie community and surrounding wilderness areas.
Stay safe, and check regularly for updates via the BC Wildfire Service website or app.
