Hosmer Fire Hall

The RDEK has released an information report summarizing public feedback from the Hosmer Fire Hall Advisory Group, with staff now finalizing the remaining technical details before presenting a formal Request for Decision (RFD) to the Board. The RFD is expected to come forward at either the December or January Board meetings, though staff note the timeline may shift as final details are completed.

The Advisory Group—comprised of local volunteers, the Electoral Area A Director, and Hosmer Fire Department leadership—was created to help evaluate solutions for the aging fire hall, which multiple professional assessments have found to be structurally deficient, non-compliant with Post-Disaster standards, and unable to support the department’s new fire engine. Community Priorities Clearly Identified

• Across all discussions, the Advisory Group emphasized four main priorities:

• Fiscal responsibility

• Long-term sustainability of fire services

• Preserving the Hosmer Community Hall

• Keeping fire services in the same general area

• These themes played a key role in evaluating five potential options for the future of the fire hall.

Summary of Options Under Review

RDEK staff presented five facility options to the Advisory Group. Their feedback is summarized below.

Option 1 – Renovate Existing Hall & Add Second Building

While the location and highway access were viewed positively, the group unanimously agreed this option is not viable, citing safety concerns, split-gear logistics, and limited space.

Option 2 – Demolish Existing Hall & Build New Fire Hall (No Community Centre)

Despite strong support for the location itself, the group strongly opposed this option due to the loss of the community hall.

Option 3 – Renovate and Expand Current Hall

This option retains the community hall and adds dedicated training space. While the group was mostly supportive, concerns remain around parking and the need for a temporary hall. Identified as a potentially workable option.

Option 4 – Purchase Adjacent Lot and Build New Hall

If the neighbouring Hoz property can be purchased, this option avoids temporary relocation, retains the community hall, resolves parking issues, and offers full design flexibility. The group identified this as a desirable option, though the property is not currently listed for sale.

Option 5 – Build New Hall at Kmiecik Rd & Dicken Rd

Located outside flood zones and in a more central long-term position, this option drew mixed reactions. Some members opposed moving outside Hosmer proper, while others supported the benefits of a purpose-built hall. Considered a possible option.

Next Steps

RDEK staff are now refining project details and preparing the formal Request for Decision that will guide the Board’s next move in determining a permanent solution for Hosmer’s fire protection needs. The report is expected at the December or January Board meeting, pending completion of final assessments.

We will continue to follow the process as the RDEK moves toward a decision that balances safety, cost, and community values.
