The Outdoor Community Rink will be opening soon for the 2018/19 season! Community volunteers will be out this week preparing the ice surface, and we anticipate the rink will be open mid-December.
Last year, the City of Fernie was generously gifted the boards and rink package from The Calgary Flames
Foundation. In addition, numerous community organizations and volunteers contributed to the operation and
success of the Outdoor Community Rink. The Leisure Services Advisory Board committed significant efforts to
recruit volunteers to assist with the rink and are currently working with City staff to prepare for a successful
start-up to the season.
“The City of Fernie appreciates the commitment and assistance of the many contributors and donors to the
Outdoor Community Rink. The facility could not have been successful without the help of the community,” said
Mayor Ange Qualizza. “This facility allows residents and tourists to have access to alternative healthy living
options and we look forward to seeing community members and visitors enjoy this great amenity.”
Community volunteers will start the ice installation this week.
While crews are making ice, the City asks that people to remain off the surface until the official opening date. This will ensure that we create the ice safely and efficiently.
They anticipate the Outdoor Community Rink will be open in mid-December with the weather permitting, and they look forward to seeing the community enjoy this amazing facility.
A big thank you to all the volunteers that make this facility happen. Volunteerism makes community!
Stay tuned for the official opening date!
