Last night in Montreal, Fernie’s own Mike Delich was honored with induction into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame, celebrating his decades-long dedication to the sport of skiing. Surrounded by family at the spectacular Induction Gala held at the Westbury Ballroom, Hilton Garden Inn Midtown, Mike was recognized for his extraordinary contributions as an athlete, coach, leader, and entrepreneur.
Born and raised in Rossland, BC, Mike’s journey in skiing began as a passionate member of the Red Mountain Alpine Racers. His love for the sport and vision for its future quickly propelled him to leadership roles, where he made a lasting impact on Canadian skiing.
In the early days of his career, Mike founded the Red Mountain Talent Squad, a groundbreaking ski program that developed countless young athletes, including Olympic gold medalist Kerrin Lee-Gartner. His innovative approach fostered not only skiing excellence but also life skills, creating a foundation for future champions.
After moving to Fernie in 1979, Mike extended his influence by establishing structured coaching programs and a vibrant Nancy Greene League, which involved parents as volunteers to create a strong sense of community. His contributions shaped Fernie into a thriving hub for skiing and snowboarding, while his entrepreneurial ventures, such as Fernie Vacation Properties Inc., elevated the town’s profile as a world-class tourism destination.
Mike’s impact extended far beyond local slopes. In 1988, he served as Chief of Race for the Men’s Downhill and Super G at the Calgary Olympic Games, leading over 400 volunteers and coordinating with FIS, media, and the Olympic organizers to deliver a flawless event. He continued his legacy as a FIS Technical Delegate (TD) for 25 years, officiating at prestigious events such as World Cups, US Ski Championships, NorAms, Far-East Cups, and the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics, where he was named a Jury Member for Alpine ski events.
Mike’s influence on Canadian skiing includes his time on the Board of Alpine Canada, where his leadership helped shape the sport at a national level. A mentor to many, he has left an indelible mark on athletes, coaches, and officials alike. Even in retirement, Mike remains an honoured FIS Technical Delegate Emeritus, a title befitting his enduring legacy.
Throughout his career, Mike has embodied the spirit of skiing: passion, excellence, and community. Whether developing young talent, leading international events, or building Fernie’s reputation as a skiing destination, he has approached every endeavor with humility and dedication. His induction into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame is a testament to his profound impact on the sport.
Mike continues to live an active lifestyle in Fernie, enjoying the mountains that have been central to his life’s work. His contributions over the past four decades have not only strengthened Canadian skiing but have also inspired countless others to embrace the joy and spirit of the sport.
Congratulations, Mike! Fernie is fortunate and proud to count you as one of our own.
