The RCMP are urging Fernie residents and visitors to take extra precautions with their bicycles following a recent uptick in bike thefts throughout the community. Many of these investigations have been centered around Fernie, with unlocked or poorly secured bikes proving to be easy targets for thieves.
Whether you’re grabbing a coffee downtown, running errands, or leaving your bike outside a friend’s place, it’s essential to always use a quality lock—and secure it to a solid, immovable object. Opportunistic thefts can happen quickly and often in broad daylight.

Commencal meta SX, Grey with red pedals and grips. Stolen from outside the Park Place Liquor Store around 5pm July 26th. Has shotgun seat handles attached for toddler.
Police also stress the importance of keeping accurate records of your bike. Before you hit the trails or the streets, take a moment to record your bike’s serial number and snap a few photos. Include any unique markings, accessories, or modifications that could help identify your bicycle if it’s stolen and later recovered.
Fernie’s trail network and cycling community are a big part of what makes this town so special. Let’s all do our part to keep it that way—lock your bikes, and report suspicious activity.
