The Fernie Transfer Station is now home to a year-round household hazardous waste collection depot.
“This depot will provide Elk Valley residents with an accessible way to discard of hazardous materials that are commonly found in their homes and help keep these products out of the landfill,” says RDEK Environmental Services Manager Kevin Paterson.
The depot will be open to the public during regular transfer station hours of Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday and Sunday 10:00am to 4:00pm excluding holidays. There is no charge for residents to drop off materials to the Household Hazardous Waste depot.
Many common materials are accepted at the depot from old household cleaners and solvents to gardening and pest control products.
“We have heard from residents that there is a desire to have more opportunities to discard of waste in a safe and responsible way, and we are excited to be able to offer this option at the Fernie Transfer Station,” adds Paterson.
This Household Hazardous Waste Depot is the second depot in the East Kootenay, the first has been operating since 2019 at the Cranbrook Transfer Station.
