There have been some concerns raised by the legal land user of the Mount Proctor Trails (Swine Flu, Mad Cow, and Far Side). The legal land user is grazing cattle and his grazing rights are to be respected or trail access could be denied.
The Fernie Trails Alliance negotiated a user position of no dogs and no events on these trails several years ago to maintain access. Unfortunately the legal land user has been quoted allowing friends to take dogs on the trails prior to his grazing season. This unfortunately has added to the confusion and has several adjacent residents and others frequenting the property with their dogs. A few locals believe dog access is their right.
More recently someone pulled out the cattle gate where riders gain access to these trails leaving an the gate open for cattle to wander off. The land user had to repair the gate to keep his cattle in.
Riders and hikers must understand and respect that this property is legally cattle grazing land and not for recreating purposes.
If user behavior does not change (NO DOGS and maintain cattle fencing), riders and hikers could face seeing the trails decommissioned.
Please help maintain access by communicating the rules to violators.
