Fernie’s own Kaleb Barnum is gearing up to represent Canada on the world stage as he departs on January 8 for the 2025 FISU 32nd Winter World University Games in Turin, Italy. The games, which run from January 13 to 23, bring together the top university athletes from around the globe to celebrate elite competition and sportsmanship.
Barnum, a standout in the world of ski cross, is a member of the Canadian National Ski Cross Team (NextGen) and holds the title of World Junior Ski Cross Champion. At just 20 years old, Barnum has already built an impressive resume while balancing his academic pursuits as a third-year biomechanics student at the University of Calgary.
“I’m incredibly honored to represent Canada and compete alongside so many talented athletes,” Barnum said ahead of his departure.
After the Winter University Games, Barnum will remain in Europe to compete in the Europa Cup Ski-Cross Race Series, further honing his skills against top-tier international competitors. He is expected to return to Canada in mid-February, bringing with him valuable experience gained on the European circuit.
As Barnum prepares to take on the world’s best, his hometown of Fernie is cheering him on. Known for producing outstanding athletes, Fernie continues to showcase its passion for winter sports and its commitment to fostering young talent.
Stay tuned for updates on Barnum’s journey and results from the Winter World University Games. Best of luck, Kaleb—Fernie is behind you all the way!
