The Fernie Outdoor Rinks Society has emerged as a beacon of community spirit, dedicated to preserving and enhancing the town’s cherished outdoor skating traditions. This passionate group of volunteers is committed to providing safe, accessible, and inclusive outdoor rinks for all residents to enjoy.

The Society’s board comprises devoted individuals: Jorde Goethals, Angie Krasnay, Chris Moulton, Sheena Fulton, and Christy Nguyen, with Tim Cooper leading maintenance efforts. Together, they have been instrumental in revitalizing the outdoor rink near the Fernie Aquatic Centre, a beloved community hub that faced challenges due to infrastructure issues and volunteer shortages.

On February 11, the Society’s board met with key stakeholders from the City of Fernie. This meeting marked a collaborative approach to rejuvenating the outdoor rink, resulting in an agreement that provides resources and support from the city. The immediate focus is on maximizing the current winter season’s skating opportunities, with trained volunteers working diligently to prepare the rink for public use.

The success of the Fernie Outdoor Rinks Society hinges on community involvement. They are actively seeking more volunteers to join their efforts, emphasizing that “many hands make light work.” Interested individuals are encouraged to fill out the Volunteer Form to contribute to this vital community project.

The outdoor rink holds deep significance for Fernie residents. Established in 2017 with support from the Calgary Flames Foundation, it serves as a memorial for three individuals who tragically lost their lives in an ammonia leak at the Fernie Memorial Arena that same year. The rink stands as a testament to the community’s resilience and commitment to honoring their memory.

Despite facing obstacles such as the closure of the temporary amenity building and previous volunteer shortages, the Society remains steadfast. Their collaboration with the city and renewed community interest have breathed new life into the project, ensuring that outdoor skating remains a vibrant part of Fernie’s recreational offerings.

The Fernie Outdoor Rinks Society invites all community members to be part of this meaningful endeavor. Whether through volunteering time, providing resources, or spreading the word, every contribution helps sustain this cherished community space. Together, they aim to keep the spirit of outdoor skating alive in Fernie for generations to come.
