Fernie opened December 2nd with good powder skiing and boarding in the upper bowls. The stoke was high with overnight campers waiting for the ceremonial first chair. Hundreds showing up between 7Am and 9AM for that first ride of the season. Greg “G-Money” Barrow once again managed to be on the first chair!
On Friday the skiing was limited to Upper Timber and Currie Bowls, both accessible from the Timber and White Pass Chairs. I skied the morning and had several untracked powder runs in Currie Bowl and skated back to White Pass via Trespass Trail.
On Saturday the whole mountain opened with 17cms fresh overnight and the powder skiing was awesome. With the Arctic front moving in the conditions are prime for the Fernie Factor! Early season skiing in Fernie is delivering as expected.
Some of us play on the mountain and others work. Three quarters of the terrain at Fernie Alpine Resort sits beneath five looming headwalls in avalanche paths – a constant hazard if not for the daily efforts of a skilled team of technicians who keep the mountain safe. Here is an excellent video capturing their effort to keep FAR safe:
