The Fernie Holiday Kickoff delivered one of the strongest community turnouts in years, as the Fernie Chamber of Commerce hosted a festive, three-day celebration that brought together residents, visitors, and more than 57 local businesses for the start of the holiday season.
Fernie’s downtown came alive on Saturday evening when 2nd Avenue was transformed into a pedestrian-only winter gathering place. Families enjoyed hot chocolate from the Salvation Army, three bustling Craft Fair venues in partnership with The Arts Station, accessibility rides offered by Cycling Without Age, live carols by the Fernie Community Carolers, and a visit from the Griz.
A community-wide Holiday Window Display Contest added even more colour to the streets. Ten businesses participated, with Island Lake Lodge taking top honours for their creative and vibrant display. Their prize funds will support their staff Christmas celebration.
The evening program drew a full crowd, highlighted by an energetic performance from the Fernie Academy Grade 11 class. Mayor Nic Milligan then led the countdown to a spectacular fireworks show delivered by Big Bang Fireworks—widely praised as the best display the event has seen.
Local spending also hit new highs. Shoppers submitted receipts over $20 for a chance to win a $1,000 gift certificate or two lift tickets to Fernie Alpine Resort. A total of 1,144 entries were received, representing $119,453.22 in confirmed local spending.
“Having the Holiday Kickoff fall on Small Business Saturday this year was ideal,” said Chamber Executive Director Wendy McDougall. “Both highlight the essential role of local businesses in Fernie’s economy. These businesses create jobs, support local causes, and keep money circulating close to home. In Fernie, you often meet the owners behind the counter—and you can feel how much they care about this community.”
The Chamber extends thanks to:
• All 57 participating businesses for bringing this campaign to life.
• Chamber staff Cecile Lefort and Kate Baines for organizing such an exceptional event.
• The City of Fernie for their financial support, decorating downtown, and managing the road closure that made the pedestrian zone possible.
• Sponsors: StellerVista Credit Union, EVR, Tourism Fernie, and Fernie Alpine Resort.
• The Arts Station for collaborating to integrate the community Craft Fair.
• The Fernie Academy for their outstanding on-stage performance.
• Cycling Without Age for ensuring the event was accessible for all residents.
• CBAL for making sure our letters to Santa get delivered safely.
• And of course—the Griz—for making a special holiday-season appearance.
The Fernie Holiday Kickoff once again demonstrated Fernie’s strong community spirit—and the local pride that continues to sustain small businesses throughout the valley.
