The Fernie Ghostriders are heading into the playoffs with momentum — and perfect timing.
After closing out the regular season with two home wins, the Riders secured home ice for the first round and will now welcome the Golden Rockets to the Fernie Memorial Arena just as Griz Days kicks off. Playoff hockey and Fernie’s biggest winter weekend? That’s a good combination.
Last Friday in Fernie, the Ghostriders defeated the Kimberley Dynamiters 5–1. The win locked up home ice advantage against Golden in the opening round. Kimberley’s loss left them fourth overall, while Fernie finished 10th in the standings — but the numbers tell a deeper story.
The Ghostriders allowed just 118 goals this season, second-best in the league behind only the Revelstoke Grizzlies, who gave up 108. Defence travels in the playoffs, and Fernie has quietly built its identity around it.
Fernie followed up with a 4–2 win over the Creston Valley Thunder Cats to close out the regular season.
On paper, that final game didn’t change anything. Fernie had already clinched. Creston was finishing its season — and its time in the KIJHL. But it didn’t feel like an exhibition. The third period was chippy, with tempers flaring and some questionable crosschecks that had the crowd on edge.
Normally, when two teams know they won’t meet again, there’s a handshake or at least some acknowledgement at the final horn. That didn’t happen. There’s no love lost between those benches — and that edge carried right to the buzzer.
The opening round schedule is set. Fernie hosts Golden at the Fernie Memorial Arena at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7. The series then shifts to the Golden & District Centennial Arena for Games Three and Four on Monday, March 9 and Tuesday, March 10.
Griz Days will fill the streets. The arena will be packed. And playoff hockey in Fernie always carries a different kind of energy.
Now it’s Golden’s turn to step into a Griz Days crowd and see what that feels like.
