The Fernie Fire Hall Replacement Project has received $7 million in federal funding, covering approximately 45 per cent of the new facility’s $15.5 million construction budget.

The funding was awarded through the Strategic Priorities Fund, part of the federally funded Build Communities Strong Fund Community stream administered in British Columbia by the Union of BC Municipalities.

Construction of the purpose-built fire hall is scheduled to begin in early August 2026. Fernie firefighters are expected to move into the completed facility in fall 2027.

Planning and design work for the new fire hall is complete. The facility has been designed to improve emergency response, firefighter health and safety, training capacity and long-term operational flexibility.

The modern building will provide Fernie Fire Rescue with the space and infrastructure needed to continue delivering fire protection and emergency services as the community grows.

“This funding is a significant investment in the safety and resilience of our community,” Mayor Nic Milligan said. “A new fire hall has been a long-standing priority for council and will provide firefighters with the modern space needed to train, respond and serve Fernie effectively for years to come.”

“I am thrilled that the City of Fernie has received a $7-million grant from the Strategic Priorities Fund for our new fire hall,” said Fernie Councillor Tracy Audia. “The funding will cover 45 per cent of the construction cost, with work beginning in August and the new hall expected to open in 2027.”

The Fernie project is one of 55 infrastructure and capacity-building projects announced July 30 by the federal and provincial governments and UBCM. The projects are receiving a combined federal investment of more than $152 million.
