The TransRockies 2024 Gravel Royale took place at Nipika Resort, and it was nothing short of spectacular and Fernie’s cycling community was well-represented. As the last day of racing dawned, there was a sense of accomplishment and excitement in the air as riders lined up for the final push of this year’s epic journey. The weather was perfect, and the smiles on the faces of every participant told the story of a race well-run and thoroughly enjoyed.
Fernie’s cycling community was a mix of podium chasers and adventure seekers, taking on the challenging gravel roads and Nordic trails. Regardless of the objective, it was challenging ride on hearty terrain. Gearhub Sports, Fernie’s favorite sports store, was thrilled to sponsor the event and support the local riders who took part. Among the cyclists from Fernie were Alina Jackman, Jouko Haapanen, Mac Potter, Lindsay Watson, Dylan Baile, Carter Nieuwesteeg and myself (Dan Savage). Notably, Alina Jackman secured a spot on the podium placing second in the Half Pint/Female Under 50, showcasing the strength and skill that Fernie riders brought to the race.
Carter Nieuwesteeg, Fernie Gravel Grind organizer, commented, “Unfortunately, I wouldn’t make it onto the second half of the race due to a mechanical Definitely some heartbreak on the dance floor for me as things were really clicking out there, but I guess you gotta pay to play sometimes. Such a good group to duke it out with and share 3 days of backwoods vibes with.”
These cyclists pushed themselves, embodying the spirit of adventure and determination that the TransRockies Gravel Royale is all about. Their participation reflected the vibrant cycling culture in Fernie and the community’s commitment to outdoor recreation.

At the heart of the event was the Chill Tent, a place that truly lived up to its name. It wasn’t just a spot to cool down after a grueling day on the bike—it was a vibrant hub of social activity. Riders gathered to share their stories, celebrate their victories, and forge new friendships. The atmosphere was festive and spirited, with an endless supply of food and beverages fueling the good vibes. It was a place where the camaraderie that defines gravel racing was on full display.
If you missed out on this year’s Gravel Royale, don’t worry—there’s always next year! The 2025 edition of the TransRockies Gravel Royale promises to be even more thrilling, with three days of racing spread over four days, and two distance options each day (Full Pint and Half Pint) to cater to different levels of ambition. Whether you’re chasing victory or just out for the adventure, this race offers something for everyone.
Whether you’re a seasoned gravel racer or new to the sport, the TransRockies Gravel Royale should be at the top of your list for 2025. It’s a friendly yet challenging event that leaves racers in awe of the beauty of the Rockies and the strength of their own resilience.
Nipika Resort, the host venue for the Gravel Royale, is an off-grid adventure destination.
