1) 2012 Griz Days Partnering Agreement with the Fernie Chamber of Commerce
Council approved the partnering agreement with the Fernie Chamber of Commerce for the provision of municipal services, being the hosting of the 35th Annual Griz Days Festival. The City will provide the Chamber of Commerce the sum of $10,000 to host Festival from March 2 – 4, 2012.
Council also approved the Chamber of Commerce Special Occasion Liquor License Application to host a beer garden at the intersection of 6th St and 1st Ave. on Friday, March 2 from 6:00 – 10:00 pm and again on Saturday, March 3 from 7:00 – 10:00 pm.
2) Appointments to Fill Vacancies on Civic Agencies
Council considered the new expressions of interest received and appointed the following to the committees:
a) Green House Gas Emission Reduction Committee: Mr. Mr. Aaron Goos
b) Official Community Plan Implementation Committee:
Mr. Simon Howse, Mr. Kevin McIsaac and Mr. Keith Liggett
3) Columbia Basin Trust Funding Sub-Region Initiative
Mayor and Council will be extending an invitation to the Districts of Sparwood and Elkford and the Area A Director for the Regional District of East Kootenay to discuss a new funding opportunity available from the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) intended to sustain and develop successful, healthy communities in the Elk Valley. Forming the funding sub-region will prove beneficial to all our communities. In addition, the group will discuss physician recruitment and retention for the Elk Valley and the 2016 or 2018 BC Winter or Summer Games Bid opportunities.
4) Fernie Rod and Gun Wigwam Flats Wildlife Habitat Enhancement Project
The Fernie Rod and Gun Club recently completed a conservation project to enhance “Class I” winter range feeding area on the Wigwam Flats. The project won a provincial award and is now nominated for a National Award.
Council will be forwarding a congratulatory letter of thanks and support to the Club on the completion of the project and on being nominated for the National Award.
