Fernie’s own Emilie Mann shattered the women’s course record at the Run Rabbit Run 100-miler in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, on September 15th. Finishing the grueling race in 19 hours, 48 minutes, and five seconds, Mann beat the previous record of 20:16:54—set by Colorado’s Michele Yates in 2013—by nearly 30 minutes. She attributes her incredible performance to more than just extensive training.
Known for its challenging high-altitude terrain, the race begins at over 2,000 meters and includes 6,000 meters of climbing, testing even the most seasoned athletes. Mann shared with Canadian Running that her success was fueled by determination and the support of fellow competitors.
This remarkable performance marks Mann’s debut in the 100-mile distance. Her impressive running resume includes victories in the Golden Ultra 60K, Sinister 7 50K, and Squamish 50-Mile races in 2023. She also claimed the Canadian Long Distance Mountain Running Championship title in 2019 and represented Canada at the World Mountain Running Championships in Argentina.
During the race, Mann found herself running alongside top names in the ultra-trail community, including U.S. runners Leah Yingling (who finished second in 20:19:25), Emily Caldwell, and Clare Gallagher. “It was so fun to meet them in person,” Mann said. “When I passed each of them, it felt like passing your biggest fan; even when they were struggling, they were incredibly supportive.”
