Columbia Basin Trust is increasing its support for housing by taking the lead in constructing multi-unit residential projects in the region. This expanded approach will help address shortages across the Basin and improve access to affordable, energy-efficient homes.

Many small or rural communities face growing housing pressures, with limited rental options for low- and moderate-income residents. Advancing complex housing projects can be especially challenging in these communities, where limited local resources can slow the delivery of much-needed homes.

“Developing housing in some Basin communities comes with significant challenges, and we’re ready to help overcome them,” said Johnny Strilaeff, President and CEO, Columbia Basin Trust. “By taking a hands-on role in development, starting in Nakusp, the Trust can move projects forward more quickly, strengthen local partnerships, and ensure cost-effective, energy-efficient homes are built.”

Design and costing are underway for a six-unit rental housing building with related amenity spaces at 915 Highway 23 N in Nakusp.

Once complete, each development will be transferred to qualified local organizations to manage, ensuring long-term community ownership and stability. Projects will be financially self-sustaining and shaped by local priorities. They will also strengthen communities by supporting local jobs, enhancing energy efficiency and incorporating broadband connectivity whenever possible.

“Our goal is to ensure housing is built where it’s most needed and in ways that reflect local priorities,” added Strilaeff. “By stepping in where resources are stretched, we can help communities move forward faster and deliver homes that benefit both current and future residents.”
