Fernie’s winter trail network continues to shine as having the best groomed trail network in Western Canada, offering something for everyone. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Winter Trails & Grooming Collective, led by Tourism Fernie, our community enjoys a vast, well-maintained trail system that enhances outdoor experiences, physical activity, and overall well-being.
Every year, more people discover the joy of winter trails, and the grooming efforts grow to keep pace with the increasing demand. “The fatbiking in Fernie is as good as it gets right now!” says trail groomer Tim Cooper, reflecting the dedication that goes into maintaining Fernie’s exceptional trail conditions. The collective brings together key grooming organizations, including City of Fernie, Coal Creek Heritage Society, Fernie Alpine Resort, Fernie Snowmobile Association, Fernie Trails Alliance, and Island Lake Lodge.
With over 200 km of groomed winter trails, Fernie offers a variety of terrain for all users, including walkers, runners, snowshoers, Nordic skiers, fat bikers, snowmobilers, and snow bikers. Whether gliding along pristine Nordic tracks, carving through fresh fat bike trails, or exploring scenic backcountry snowmobile routes, Fernie’s commitment to high-quality grooming ensures an unparalleled outdoor experience. The work of the Winter Trails & Grooming Collective makes it all possible, providing access to nature, fresh air, and physical activity for everyone.
As we embrace another winter season, let’s take a moment to appreciate the organizations and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain these trails. Their dedication allows us to explore the beauty of Fernie’s winter landscape with ease and enjoyment. Think Before You Sink! is an important initiative educating winter trail users on etiquette. Thousands of hours, many volunteered, go into grooming and maintaining these trails. Paying attention to user and grooming signage is essential—if you’re sinking, you’re stinking!
If you value these incredible trails and the efforts that go into grooming them, consider purchasing a trail pass—whether for personal use or to support the local winter recreation economy. Businesses can also invest in corporate passes, which include individual passes for staff or giveaways.
